Welcome to California Community College GIS Collaborative

This site is established, first, to promote and communicate our GIS information from teams spread across the state of California.  This site provides a common repository for the various maps, documents, links and other tools we are collecting in our ongoing work. Over time, the site will also expand to provide access to our finished products and other resources to help better understand and serve the 110 California community colleges, its students, faculty and administrators.

 
Announcements
Campus Polygons Available State Wide - Monday, May 04, 2009

A state wide set of California community college campus polygons are available for viewing (see Interactive Map page) and for download (see Documents page).  The campus area maps are draft status.  Review and comment from the community college research and GIS community is encouraged. 

These polygons were also used to calculate campus centroids, replacing campus point data based previously on street addresses.  Even in draft form, both the polygons and centroids are significantly more accurate and offer new opportunities for the CCC research community.

Statewide Community College District Maps Complete! - Friday, August 01, 2008

 On behalf of the California Community College (CCC) Geographic Information System (GIS) Collaborative, I am excited to announce that a statewide map of all 72 CCC district boundaries has been completed and is available for download here.  Select the map on the left to view an enlarged image.

This set of GIS maps is a critical data analysis tool being used to integrate many different CCC data sets to answer questions important to the mission of the California Community Colleges. These maps can be used for research about regional demographics and population growth, election histories and bond election planning, enrollment forecasting, enrollment patterns of neighboring districts, traffic and public transit impacts to students and colleges, workforce development, and facilities planning and maintenance. They also can provide tools for the classroom; a GIS course at Rio Hondo College is already putting them to good use.  

I would like to express my appreciation to the mostly volunteer team of researchers, faculty, students, and CCC nonprofits who are responsible for the painstaking work that went into completing these maps. Starting with working with district leaders to find written legal descriptions to knitting together the final 72 maps from a composite set of 1.5 million polygons, a lot of time and effort has gone into completing this first version of the final map. Thanks to this collaborative endeavor, we have gained an important resource for better understanding and serving the California Community Colleges.

District Boundary vs. Service Area - Wednesday, September 19, 2007

The CCC GIS Collaborative has based most of the district maps on the written  legal description of the district boundaries.  These descriptions are maintained by each county's board of education, and they typically have been prepared by surveyors.  Visit the Documents page to view these legal descriptions.  By definition, these district boundaries are not expected to overlap, and any areas of overlap are being investigated as part of our map validation phase.

District service areas, on the other hand, are the areas from which the bulk of students reside for a given college district.  Because the California Community Collge System allows open enrollment, students are able to enroll in any college, regardless of their home address. Therefore, neighboring community college districts often have large areas of overlapping service areas.  To see a specific example for Santa Monica Community College District, please see the image in the left margin.
